Ruby Chacón

Artist, Muralist, Educator & Community Arts Organizer

[VISIT ARTIST WEBSITE →] https://www.rubychacon.com/

Ruby Chacon earned a single-subject teaching credential in Art at California State University, Sacramento in 2019. She taught at Encina High for 4 years and is currently on her 4th year at Woodland high school with a commitment to teach to culturally sustainable pedagogies. She designed and created a mural course in both school districts. She also played a key role in developing Arts and Culture, a course previously designed before her arrival. Both courses are ethnic studies-based courses aligned with Woodland Joint Unified School District’s A-G requirements. She collaborated with fellow WJUSD art educators, to help refine this curriculum.

Ruby’s work is focused on changing the school-to-prison pipeline track that impacted her ancestors and own generation. As the only one to graduate from high school and college in her immediate family, this experience inspired the pathway she chose to create spaces of belonging for and with marginalized communities by telling the counter narratives invisible in public schools and spaces. She has received numerous awards recognizing her prolific career in the arts as well as for her advocacy for humanitarian rights and social justice.
