CAEA 2024 Conference Schedule
The California Art Education Association (CAEA) is pleased to announce the in-person
convening of hundreds of art educators for the 2024 CAEA Statewide Conference in Orange,
California November 8–11, 2024. The 2024 CAEA State-wide Conference offers a
comprehensive opportunity for educators in visual arts, design, and media arts to explore
exemplary models of best practices and evidence-based methodologies.
Conference highlights include keynotes by Lalo Alcaraz, two-time Pulitzer editorial cartoon finalist, Herblock Prize awardee and consultant for the animated movie “Coco”, along with artist Wendy McNaughton, who regularly speaks and gives workshops on the unique power drawing offers to help us slow down, get curious, look deeply, and connect to people and the world around us.
Through dozens of carefully selected sessions, interactive workshops, and discussions,
participants will gain invaluable insights to enhance visual arts, design, and media arts
curriculum, as well as instruction, assessment, and leadership.
Select hands-on, ticketed “Artists Studio” Workshops must be registered for in advance.

Fulfilling the Promise of Prop 28 in CA: Collective Impact Approach to Arts
Education Equity - Dominique Enriquez (Laguna/Newport)
Proposition 28, passed in 2022, provides schools with ongoing funding - approximately
$1 billion annually - to equitably increase arts instruction and access to arts education.
We’ll share how statewide the arts education ecosystem is working together to identify
and respond to opportunities and challenges that advance equity in public arts
education.
Trauma-informed, Relational Practices for Pottery Teachers - Joshua Beckett

traumatized students and consciously, intentionally help them heal. This transformative

Multilingual Image Discussion: Tools for Language Equity and Access in Arts

What's all the fuss over 3D printing? Come to this session to find out how 3d printing
(also called additive manufacturing) is changing many industries, from housing to

Arts-based Service-learning: Transformative Pedagogy for Pre-service Teachers,

race.
BLICK: 3D Puff Pets (Sunset)
Join BLICK Art Materials in creating 3D Puff Pets! "Cute" is part of today’s visual language.
The kawaii aesthetic, with roots in Japanese culture, has evolved over decades into a worldwide
phenomenon, influencing emojis, pop media, fashion, and contemporary artists such as Takashi
Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara. In this playful workshop, participants will imagine and create a
3-dimensional creature using soft-textured materials such as craft stems, cotton fluff, felt and
yarn. Realism and cuteness are optional. A storyline can be built around the character,
expressed in a trading card that describes its abilities and traits. All materials provided.
Emotional Ink Drawings - Craig M Black (International Center Patio)
Using ink on paper, participants will explore tone and value by shading with words. Participants
will select a photo that displays emotion from a magazine, newspaper or the internet. They will
then make a list of emotional words that they can see in their photo and then use the words
generated to create values and tones in their drawing.
Artist's Studio* with Angie Wang: Drawing from Life - Nonfiction Comics (Malibu)
Creating nonfiction comics is a great way of documenting your own life or the lives of those
around you. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basics of how to channel
observations about their lives into short nonfiction comics—which may be educational,
observational, diaristic, or humorous.

Dyslexia presents differently among individuals and is often accompanied by other neurodiverse
characteristics. In art class, dyslexia can be a learning obstacle or a creative boost. In this
workshop a range of artworks by 3rd-6th grade students with dyslexia will be presented

overview of innovative artists from the 1960s to today, their approach to artmaking, and their
lasting impact.
A Report on Arts Education Future Workforce Needs - Eric Engdahl (Sierra)
With a dedicated and permanent budget stream, Proposition 28 has changed the environment
for arts education in California. This session will focus on survey data gathered from districts,
charter schools, and COEs statewide about the current environment of music and arts
education and the projected needs for developing an arts education workforce.
Artist's Studio* with Julie Neumann: Mini Mosaics (International Center Patio)
Mini Mosaics: Learn how to create a mosaic tile artwork from wet clay to a finished piece.
Artists will use paper to design a mosaic tile. They will cut and paste the paper template to
understand how to make the clay tiles and accommodate for clay shrinkage. Then, finished
glazed and fired tiles will be provided to assemble their own mini coaster or trivet. Artists will use
mastic to stick the tile to a wood backing. Grout will be used to fill the gaps and finish the
artwork. Artists will leave with a finished sample that they can scale to any larger student
project (ex: skateboard blank or larger wood canvas).

Turnaround Arts California (TA:CA) is an arts nonprofit that partners with Title 1 schools
statewide to engage and empower communities through the arts. In this workshop, you will
learn how TA:CA assists teachers in leveraging the arts to increase equity in student academic
outcomes and engagement through the Lesson Lab professional learning program. Lesson Lab
is a process where teachers collaborate with their principal on arts-integrated lessons that assist
students in developing mastery in literacy, core content, and arts standards.

Learn to use the Gelli Plate and make unique and vibrant multi-layer monoprints by
hand! In this workshop, learn how to: apply paint onto a Gelli plate, create masks,
incorporate stencils, layer pain and build up multiple layers. Participants will create
unique multi-layered prints that may be matted, framed, or used in mixed media art.
